In the lush district of Bududa, Uganda, female coffee farmers are transforming their lives and community through the cultivation of coffee. The initiative sought to pilot a new business model through decentralized mini-grids, constructed via unconventional partnerships with the private sector, energy service companies, impact investors, NGOs, and the Indian government. Additionally, 90% of disabled entrepreneurs believe they have not been treated equally in their pursuit of investment, leading to a potential funding gap of over half a billion pounds. The report also highlights barriers such as a lack of accessible applications, systems, and practices, and a persistent view of disabled people and disability-related businesses through the lens of charity rather than commercial success.

Comment: How sovereign wealth funds can leverage their capital for social good

Investing in people is emerging as both a morally rewarding proposition and a wise economic strategy. Dr. Ana Nacvalovaite, working at the Oxford Centre for Mutual & Co-owned Business at Kellogg College, University of Oxford, has been exploring how influential sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) like Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority could leverage their capital for societal and environmental benefits. With the amount held by the largest SWFs more than doubling since 2007 to $9.1 trillion in 2021, the potential is immense. Dr. Nacvalovaite’s research proposes a shift in investment strategy, urging SWFs to direct their vast capital towards co-operatives, mutuals, co-owned businesses, and social enterprises globally. The goal is to align these funds with Sustainable Development Goals such as decent work and economic growth, reduced inequalities, and climate action. By investing in alternative enterprises that consider the “triple bottom line” of people, planet, and profit, SWFs can foster local communities, job creation, and a transition towards a more inclusive and sustainable economy. This innovative approach represents a new frontier in investing, reflecting the sector’s potential to contribute to a sustainable and equitable world.
